oh, canada

so, this isn’t from europe, but it is from my first international trip in almost 10 years. my parents and i went to vancouver in october for my uncle’s wedding, and i fell IN LOVE with the scenery. i can’t wait to see more of nature overseas.

first leg booked – london, u.k.

hi all!

i’ve just booked my first hostel, which means the first leg of my european tour is finalized! i’m staying in london from feb. 6 to 9, at the wombats city hostel london.

as a first time solo traveler, i’m a little nervous about navigating the tube with my luggage and no wifi/gps, but it’s something i’ll have to get used to. i arrive at london heathrow airport at 12 p.m. and will take the tube to tower hill, which is about one hour of travel time. when i was beginning to plan, my mom and i thought about booking hotel rooms while i traveled before classes since we were wary of hostels. after tons of research and talking to people who have traveled, we decided hostels were the most cost-effective way. since i’m going to be by myself, i think it’ll be much easier to make friends in hostels as opposed to walking around cities  and returning to a hotel room alone every night.

wombats has wonderful reviews and is a well-known chain of hostels in europe. i was drawn to its price and amenities, despite it being east of the main city. i’ll be staying in a 6-bed female dorm with an en suite bathroom and locker. i think the biggest challenge will be getting any amount of sleep in a hostel, because i am an incredibly light sleeper (and a bit of a neat freak.)

while in london, i want to do some touristy things, but i also want to see some lesser-known sights. i’ve heard wonderful things about the sky garden, which provides spectacular views of the city, and is FREE.

St. Paul’s Cathedral is also on my London bucket list. I’m not very religious, but I appreciate beautiful architecture. Also, my parents would kill me if I skipped this one.

the countdown begins…

here i am, 3 months and 1 day before i will be boarding a flight to London, U.K.

IMG_4807.jpgit’s absolutely unreal. this year has undoubtedly been the most challenging and discouraging year of my life – but i’m still here.

i am beyond thrilled at the prospect of going abroad and seeing the world through these fresh eyes, and i am so excited to be able to give you all the opportunity to join me.

long story short,
things are different; i am going abroad with a different attitude, a different outlook and a different purpose.

this semester’s classes have proven more difficult than i could have imagined. each day, i count my blessings, though, and remind myself that my education is a privilege, as is my european excursion.

my plans are not final, but as of now, here they are:

  • February 5, 2017 – Fly from LAX to London-Heathrow Airport
  • Feb. 6 – Arrive in London
  • Feb. 9 – Train from London to Paris, France
  • Feb. 14 – Train from Paris, France to Brussels, Belgium
  • Feb. 16 – Train from Brussels, Belgium to Köln, Germany
  • Feb. 18 – Train from Köln, Germany to Frankfurt, Germany
  • Feb. 20 – Train from Frankfurt, Germany to Marburg, Germany
  • Feb. 21 – Orientation at Philipps-Universität Marburg
